"What a joy! A biography about a black performer that is sensitive, so intelligent (!), honest, and utterly reliable. Mr. Gavin is a serious biographer. He has high standards, writes with simplicity and clarity, and respects his subject. I am reading, and re-reading after I've read. I believe this is the most detailed portrait I have ever seen of her early years. I saw "Jamaica" during its New York run. Yes, a thin show, but the spirit that poured off the stage!! They were all wonderful performers and so happy to be giving what they gave! Yes, Josphine really stopped the show. I remember her long pony-tail and her spins. One felt that the atom should be left alone just to make sure Ms. Premice would be around a long time! I can understand why the show got her a husband! Thank you, Mr. Gavin. Thank you."
