"Do you know any Conservatives? If you don't, and even if you don't want to, you should still read Mr. Levin's book just to get an idea of what they are all about.
Conservatism isn't what you hear portrayed on the news, and it isn't about what you hear lampooned on late night TV talk or comedy shows. Conservatives are not necessarily Republicans, although Conservatives often vote Republican. Many Conservatives are Independents, especially in large, metropolitian areas...using that party as political camoflage.
If you are deep undercover politically, this book will give you the confidence to come out of the political closet. If you think that Conservatives are Republicans, then you'll learn the difference. Are you an individual, with a unique set of gifts? Or do you identify yourself as part of a group first, and as an individual second? Learn about the danger of sacrificing yourself for group think. If you think that Conservatives are out of touch with the realities of our modern society, you'll read how Conservatism is our true foundation and is just as relavant today as it was 233 years ago...or thousands of years ago when Conservatism was first discussed.
People have tried to redefine the meaning of liberty and freedom since the time of our founding...this book details the changes our country has been through and lays out the formula for halting the slow erosion of our personal liberties and freedoms.
I doubt this book will change anyone on the left, but for those of you who identify yourself as a moderate, I suggest giving it a once through. You will have a better idea of where you stand politically, and be able to articulate your views...vis-a-vis the left and the right.
There are a great deal of politcal books out there to choose from - both on the left and right. Most are poorly written, and slapped together to make some coin for the author and publisher. This book took the author 18 months to write, and he draws from his vast wealth of political experiences which began early in his life. What makes Mr. Levin different from his contemporaries is the very thing that makes this book a joy to read...he is constitutional lawyer and scholar. He lays out the principles of Conservatism as he would the facts in a trial; straight to the point, annotated, and in logical progression. It is well written, and concise.
If you have to choose one book, make it Liberty & Tyranny."
